…viajar la mitad del mundo

2helftevandiewereldOne day we took South America’s map and our globe to get perspective on what we as #travellingfamily were up to.  Mentioning places and reading about the next town sounds fun and so easy, until you realise that the trip from Rio to Ushuaia in Argentina is 12hours, approximately 4000km.

That evening my son, now 9, was sitting next to me and out of nowhere said: “I do not know if I will be able to make this trip”. I asked him if he wanted to stay, maybe at grandparents, cousins or at a fiends’ place.  He was adamant that he was going with us, but he is not going to make it…

He was sobbing, long, endless tears. I dragged him closer.  He sat on my lap – like he always does – catlike, where there is no space he will find one.  So he explained: “I do not like driving and I will not be able to sit in a car everyday…” So we talked it over again… cars, busses, trains, flying long distances, hiking, camping, staying in Airbnb accommodation and whatever ideas I could think of.  If we feel we’ve had enough, we book into something nice. If we like a place, we stay.  If we don’t, we move on. He did not hear a word …his next remark was: ” …and I don’t think I can walk that far, it’s half the earth …

I was a bit relieved …after all he did pay attention when we looked at the map and globe earlier that day, the rest …nada…
